Performance analysis of TCP/IP over ATM networken_US
ATM is an emerging protocol for high speed network while TCP/IP is a widely adopted protocol for internetworking implemented all over the world. A lot of existing applications are built on top of TCP/IP protocol stack. In order to make use of the future ATM high speed transport network for the existing applications programs, a standard of running TCP/IP over ATM network must be defined. There are several suggested recommendations. In this thesis, we are going to analyse the performance of running IP directly over ATM. LAN emulation is another kind of method for implementing ATM LAN but this thesis will not go into details on LAN emulation. This thesis is focused on the throughput efficiency analysis for TCP on IP over ATM. Assuming a virtual channel connection has been established, the throughput efficiency is calculated and verified by simulations. No real ATM machines and no real ATM network are used as we have to induce some cell loss in the simulated ATM network. We will analyse the throughput efficiency for different sizes of send socket buffer and receive socket buffer. Also we will see the variation of the throughput efficiency versus different cell loss probability. Finally, we compare the throughput efficiency of Go-back-N under high cell loss ATM network with the one using selective retransmission. It is found that selective retransmission is more superior than Go-back-N for running TCP over high cell loss ATM network.en_US
