dcterms.abstractThe study of long range dependence characteristics [1,2] of variable bit-rate video traffic over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network has been a hot topic since ATM networks are designed and used for carrying such kind of delay time sensitive and bandwidth demand changing traffic. Bandwidth is precious and buffers in network equipment are limited so it is very important to have a proper model for traffic prediction in bandwidth and buffer allocation. In this project, ATM cell rate was chosen as a traffic measurement parameter. A testing network was set up for cell rate measurement. MPEG video traffic samples, as variable video traffic sources, were passed through the network in our measurement. By using the R/S analysis, we deduced the Hurst parameter, a measurement of long range dependence for each traffic sample. The Hurst parameters found were used to determine the corresponding Fractional Brownian Motion model and Factional ARIMA model of those video traffic samples. These two models are commonly used to model Long Range Dependence sequence. The auto-correlation against the lag of cell rate of each measurement sample was plotted to compare with these two models.
