dcterms.abstractThe city is the most active area for human activities. It also an important field for the geographic information system (GIS) research. With the technology advancement, 2D GIS no longer meet the latest needs due to its obvious limitation. As we live in a three-dimensional (3D) world, a 3D simulation system is a compliance with human intuition. The establishment of the large-scale urban scene with the digital 3D model is an important content of digital city construction. Urban 3D geographic information system, which is mainly used for real 3D description, visualization and analysis management of spatial objects in the urban area. It is widely used in urban planning, urban management, emergency command, security and other fields. One of the research interests, in the past as well as at present, is that the 3D models normally come from a range of different sources in different formats generated by professionals, such as 3ds, KML, and dae. In addition, not only the geometry but also semantic aspects about the building, such as its function or type, are becoming more and more important in a modern 3D GIS platform.en_US
dcterms.abstractThe CityGML offers a possible solution for these problems. CityGML is the international standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) for the representation and exchange of 3D city models. It defines the three-dimensional geometry, topology, semantics, and appearance of the most relevant topographic objects in urban or regional contexts. These definitions are provided in different, well-defined Levels-of-Detail (multiresolution model). The focus of CityGML is on the semantical aspects of 3D city models, its structures, taxonomies and aggregations, allowing users to employ virtual 3D city models for advanced analysis and visualization tasks in a variety of application domains such as urban planning, indoor/outdoor pedestrian navigation, environmental simulations, cultural heritage, or facility management. It is particularly important for massive 3D spatial data to research the CityGML-based 3D spatial data storage management, edit operation, cross-platform transformation, visualization, and publishing processes. This paper analyzes the status of current implication and research of CityGML at home and abroad. Points out the existing problems of CityGML and propose some possible solution. This study also takes the establishment of Hong Kong Polytechnic University 3D geodatabase for example, describes the processes of the storage management, editing, parsing, display and release of CityGML spatial data. Experimental results show that this approach can enhance the practicability and interoperability of current 3D digital city models, promote the sharing and standardization of the 3D spatial data, and improve the overall efficiency of digital city construction.
