Abstract: The thermal effect on soil behaviours is of great concern to geotechnical engineers for relevant projects. This dissertation mainly focuses on the consolidation of soft soils exhibiting creep in 1D and 2D conditions under different temperatures. The consolidation behaviours of Hong Kong Marine Clay (HKMC) were examined and investigated by a series of multi-stage loading oedometer tests at different temperatures. The permeability, the compressibility properties, and the creep behaviour at different temperatures were observed and analyzed from the oedometer tests. It can be found that the permeability increases with increasing temperature, and the creep coefficient does not always go up as temperature increases. The maximum value of creep coefficient was obtained from the sample tested at 40 °C instead of the sample at 60 °C. The results of oedometer tests indicate that heating can increase the permeability, accelerate the rate of consolidation, and change the creep rate to different extents for HKMC. To further investigate the effect of temperature on consolidation with creep of HKMC, a physical model was designed. The effect of thermo-vacuum preloading with PVD on the consolidation and settlement of HKMC slurry was studied through the physical model. The settlement, variation of pore water pressure, water content, and mechanism thermo-vacuum preloading were observed and analyzed. Three oedometer tests were carried out after physical model tests, and the results showed the compression coefficient decreased compared with the results of the oedometer before physical model tests. It can be found that thermo-vacuum preloading with PVDs can accelerate the consolidation of HKMC and can reduce the post-construction settlement. Hansbo's method for horizontal consolidation and a new simplified Hypothesis B method are adopted to calculate the consolidation settlement with creep of HKMC slurry considering thermal effect. The settlement can be calculated by the new simplified Hypothesis B method with the value of Uh determined by Hansbo's method. The values of ch and kh/kv are determined from plotting curves. The influence of temperature on consolidation settlement is also considered. The feasibility of the calculation method can also be verified by comparing the calculated values with the measured settlement in the physical model test. In the last chapter, the main findings and conclusions of the study have been summarized and listed. Recommendations for further are also presented.
