Abstract: The seismic design concepts and specific design provisions of beam-column-joints from ACI318-19, Eurocode1998, NZS3101 and GB50010 are presented in this study. Four failure modes of a BCJ are introduced, including direct joint failure and indirect joint failure caused by connecting structural members. The mechanisms of a BCJ under horizontal shear force are introduced, the NZS3101 adopted the diagonal concrete strut and truss mechanism in joint design, the GB 50010 adopted the diagonal concrete strut mechanism when calculating the joint shear capacity. The concept of ductility and the applications of structural ductility in four codes are compared, four codes adopted similar provisions to ensure the overall structural ductility by adjusting the flexural resistance of columns compared to beams connecting to the same joint. The design range among four codes includes shear reinforcements and checking of shear capacity and reinforcement detailing, only ACI 318-19 and GB 50010 has considered the effect of eccentricity in joint design. All codes have considered the effect of beam longitudinal reinforcements on the joint design shear. The ACI 318-19 has the most detailed joint confinement classification in the shear capacity calculation, while only Eurocode 1998 considered the axial compression force in this calculation. In the shear reinforcement design, The Eurocode 1998 considered the effect of column shear force and tensile force in beam bars, the NZS 3101 considered column shear force and exterior joint axial load, the GB 50010 considered the beneficial effect of axial compression in joint design other than 9 seismic intensity, however the ACI 318-19 only considered the sectional dimensions and material properties in reinforcement design.
