Application of heuristic techniques for SONET transport network planningen_US
Hong Kong, being the financial centre in South-East Asia and the south gate of Mainland China, has established a versatile communication infrastructure for years. In order to maintain her competitive edge and leading position in the region, she is always keeping abreast of the latest art of technology with huge investment over time. This is no exception to the update of transmission network that offers the most advanced services to support the greedy needs from customers. SONET technology was introduced in Hong Kong in early 90's as an take-for-granted option. It set a milestone to the telecommunication industry and brought a new hope to introducing new services in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, its impacts to the existing network and its planning activity should not be negligible. As a network planner, the prime target is to optimize the transmission network between the emerging technology, resources, dynamic traffic demands and all kinds of integrated services. As the network is increasingly complicated with new elements, network planning activity is by no means trivial and is no longer proceeded manually. Heuristic techniques are well known to solve problems of stochastic nature. Three famous heuristics - Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing and Tabu Search are chosen for the research study because of their competencies to search optimality and taken as the underlying algorithms for a prototype system for SONET transport network planning. The study, not only provides an insight of the evolving network in Hong Kong but also enlarges our scopes to different heuristics and the successful application to the ring network optimization domain. Last but not least, the research study ends up with a prototype system in aid of Sonet ring network design. Although the system is primitive with little value in practice, it is a proof of using heuristics to network problem. Indeed, seeds of using heuristics on this domain are already in place, they are just awaiting our cultivation in future.en_US
