Abstract: Glass has been used extensively to externally enclose the buildings.The external cladding making use of glass provides a very good aesthetic appearance to the completed building. However, glass is a brittle material, which cannot accommodate any plastic deformation but breaks without any warning. This will lead to casualties when broken pieces of glass fall on the street level from a high-rise building. Glass has different types of supporting system, Stick System, Unit System, Glass Wall System and Four-pin Support System. The glass plate is supported uniformly along its edges in the former three systems while in the last system, the glass plate is supported by four steel brackets at its corner. For uniformly supported glass plate, there are many international design standards to determine the glass thickness in term of the uniform lateral pressure. However, there is no relevant design standard to calculate the glass thickness for the four-pin supported glass panel. The objective of the dissertation is to determine the trend for the glass strength and deflection against the glass thickness and wind pressure and thus provide a back-up information for the design of four-pin supported glass panel. Glass plate under lateral load is an example of geometrically nonlinear problem as it deflected by more than several times their thickness. "NAF-SHELL", a computer programme for linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of plates and shells developed by Professor S.L. Chan is used to study the problem. In the computer programme, a flat triangular element is employed to approximate the bending behaviour as well as the membrane behaviour of the plate/shell element. Glass panels with various aspect ratios of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 under different lateral uniform pressure were analysed by "NAF-SHELL". The maximum panel size had the area of 10m2. The allowable tensile stress of glass plate was referred to the most advanced and comprehensive Canadian Code for structural uses of glass. Design tables for four-pin supported glass plate are therefore derived from the results of analysis as a back-up design information. It is also found that the lateral deflection of glass plate under pressure is not the major consideration for the design of glass plate.
