dcterms.abstractThe objectives of this work are to provide the better understanding on the smoke aspects in tunnels. The characteristics of smoke filling, common types of tunnel ventilation system, the governing local regulations, design guidelines, and the calculation procedures were presented. A scale model of size 1500 mm (L) x 350 mm (W) x 240 mm (H) was constructed to supplement the study. Two inclination angles of 10o and 20o to horizontal were investigated. It was found that the thickness of smoke layer did not related with the tunnel gradient. The smoke propagation pattern was similiar for tunnel gradient of 10o gradient and 0o level. Furthermore, the lower cool air layer would be disappeared eventually. Five out of the ten vehicular tunnels in Hong Kong were studied thoroughly. A detailed survey on physical configuration, types of ventilation system installed, normal and emergency operation procedures were carried out. Two real tunnel fires happened in 1994 and 1996 were reported and analyzed. It is found that ventilation system was able to protect occupantss in the tunnel and control the smoke spread.en_US
