Querying XML documents with a multidimensional indexen_US
Since the current mechanisms of the web document searching is inefficient and the returned documents are usually irrelevant, the dissertation aims at working out a better way to do the job. With the belief that when more semantics are added to the supporting index and user query, the retrieved documents should match closer to what the user wants, a multidimensional index approach based on the vector space model will be used to support document view in more than one angle. To develop a multidimensional index, XML document is a better candidate than HTML document to work as a party with because it provides extra semantics in terms of document structure. To demonstrate the power of the multidimensional index, we build a local file indexer and emulate index searching. The development involves the building of a query engine and a web-based user-interface to accept users query. Based on the developed multidimensional index, the query engine will locate the relevant documents, and the searched result will then be sent back to the user's web browser for presentation. Comparisons of searching accuracy of indexes with and without structural information in index are conducted. The experiment results show that the structural information is one of the essential components in document searching especially for document with short content.en_US
