Abstract: The global shipping industry faces a multitude of complexities and uncertainties which impact on how organisations within this sector will perform in the future. Looking ahead, a large spectrum of advanced technologies, from artificial intelligence to machine learning to the Internet of Things, are threatening to disrupt existing business models. The pace of digitalisation in the shipping industry is speeding up with some shipping organisations appearing to be leading with the opportunities and knowledge gained from the new technology. The objective of this exploratory study is to identify what are the critical success factors of the global shipping industry in the digital era. This study first developed and identified the initial constructs and their corresponding measurement indicators of the critical success factors of the global shipping industry in the digital era and their corresponding organisational performance measures. This was achieved by conducting an extensive literature review of previous and extant studies from generic and industry-specific perspectives. From the results, eight initial constructs containing 29 measurement indicators of the initial constructs of critical success factors of the global shipping industry in the digital era and five initial constructs with 22 measurement indicators of the initial constructs of the organisational performance measures pertinent to the global shipping industry in the digital era were identified for further analysis. Four critical success factors were identified, namely innovation capability, risk governance capability, leadership and strategic capability and technological capability which were statistically significant with three organisational performance measures of financial performance, operational performance and marketing performance. This study then conducted a case study of Pacific Basin Shipping (HK) Limited (SEHK:2343), one of the leading shipping companies in the world, to triangulate and validate the empirical findings. This study contributes to domain knowledge on critical success factors by developing and identifying the critical success factors of the global shipping industry in the digital era and to the corresponding relationships between the identified critical success factors and the identified organisational performance measures. Additionally, this study also contributes to the practical management needs of the global shipping industry in the digital era by providing valuable insights and guidance for industry practitioners for defining, prioritising and allocation of resources in order to improve organisational performance.
