Abstract: Location information becomes important as it has been adopted in more and more services and applications. While these services and applications are mainly outdoor with the location information retrieved via the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) [1], Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLNOSS), or Assisted Global Positioning Systems (AGPS), indoor positioning systems also have high business potential. They are used in shopping malls such that merchants can push the promotional messages to the people walking near the shop [2]. They are also used in airports to keep track of the luggage of the passengers. Current indoor positioning systems employ technologies such as WiFi, ultrasound, Ultra-wideband (UWB), Radio-frequency Identification (RFID), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), motion sensor, computer vision AR, and Bluetooth. However, there are limitations in these technologies that affect their performance in identifying the mobile unit positions. In this research project, an indoor positioning system (IPS) called "Dolphin" is developed. It uses the Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) beacons with a modified Cooperative Positioning (CP) algorithm that allows the BLE beacons to be battery-operated. It significantly reduces the setup cost of the system compared to the traditional WiFi-based systems, which often require high cabling cost to supply AC power to the remote WiFi Access Points. Besides, the system first introduces the Virtual Anchor Nodes concept to reduce the number of Bluetooth beacons required and also enlarge coverage area of the system. Together with the Mobile Nodes used in the traditional CP techniques, the mean position error is improved by 40% compared with the traditional Bluetooth-based IPS systems. The system has been verified in a real exhibition environment. The experimental results show that the indoor positioning and navigation accuracy is controlled to within 3 meters, including the areas with low beacon signals. This Dolphin IPS is a new positioning and way-finding solution with digital maps for different venues. Besides providing an excellent user experience, customers' behaviours (e.g., their preferences on shops/merchants, restaurants, entertainment at different days/times of the week) can also be identified by applying big data analytics. The system is developed to optimize the beacon settings, site planning, noise cancellation, changing event handling, and stabilization. They enable a stable and robust IPS to provide an effective indoor positioning solution, particularly in exhibition environments.
