Abstract: This report describes hybrid Genetic Algorithms (GAs) in solving the school bus routing problem for a kindergarten in Hong Kong. In this school bus routing problem, it is formulated as a multi-objective combinatorial optimizations problem for which no efficient algorithms are known. To solve this NP-hard problem, the optimized assignment of school bus to each student waiting at the pre-defined pick-up point is needed to achieve the minimal number of school buses required, the minimal total travel time spent by the students at all pick-up points and the total bus travel time. It also aims at balancing the loads between school buses. It is impossible to solve the problem using the exhaustive search approach, hence we explore the hybrid GAs which combine with an approximate insertion algorithm to solve the representation problem in the simple GAs. The implemented hybrid GAs are applied to solve the school bus routing of a kindergarten in Hong Kong with some 86 students at a total of 54 pick-up points dispersed over Hong Kong Island, and yield solutions comparable or superior to the best solutions identified by a combination of heuristic and optimization methods.
