Abstract: This research uses the Chinese hip-hop festival, YOLO Music Festival as a case study and explores the impact of colour on the emotions of young attendees in the festival space through qualitative research methods including participant observation and in-depth interviews, etc. The study finds that YOLO Festival consciously chooses primary colours that match the cultural characteristics of hip-hop, working with the colour elements in the space to create a cool and passionate atmosphere. In addition, young people give full attention to the colours in the festival space, and when they perceive the colours to be in line with their understanding and imagination of hip-hop culture, the colours better influence their physiology and emotions, resulting in a more pleasant, positive, and excited state. And, in this colour-culture harmony, participants deepen their identity with themselves and the group. Colour, as a key visual element in space, has been constantly explored by psychology, architecture, and marketing. However, in the field of events and festivals, prior research on music festivals has focused more on the positive effects of music on youth's mental well-being and rarely on the emotional impact of spatial colour. This study fills this important void and brings a new perspective to the research of festivals. Besides, the study further provides insight for practitioners in the event industry that the value of colour as an atmospheric element should be appreciated, which is important for designing spaces and building brand identity.
