Abstract: The senior travel market, a travel market segmentation with huge potential, is expanding as the 'baby boom' is about to become a 'gray tsunami' and a focal point of the travel industry in the future. At the same time, the emergence of active seniors has further contributed to the development of this travel market segmentation. Scholars have also begun to realize the importance of studying the senior travel market. This study focuses on the impact of retirement on senior travel. It uses family life cycle theory to distinguish senior characteristics rather than age, which uses in most studies of senior travel.
This study uses an exploratory mixed-method with a sequence of an initial qualitative study (in-depth interviews) followed by a quantitative study. In the qualitative study, 17 respondents aged between 45 and 75 were interviewed to understand the value and meaning of retirement as understood by pre-seniors about to retire and seniors who had already retired. A total of 253 valid questionnaires were collected in the quantitative study. The following findings are drawn from the processing and analysis of the data: 1) Chinese seniors interpret retirement and travel with several key insights, such as focus from work to life, sufficient savings, and no excessive stress. 2) Retirement is considered an important turning point in life, which brings significant psychological and life state changes, yet little change in habits and preferences, including travel preferences. The elderly will maintain their travel habits and preferences after retirement, such as travel frequency and preferred types of destinations. 3) Regarding travel motivation, pull factors play a more critical role than push factors, such as food, environment, local characteristics, and customs. 4) Chinese seniors' travel constraints are mainly reflected in having parents or children to take care of, not using the local food, and concerns about health or safety during travel. This study will help tourism product marketers understand the needs of seniors in a broad context and use these results in strategic marketing campaigns.
