Abstract: Previous research has probed code-switching (CS) use in school settings, but university context, especially among year three and four students, was neglected, as CS in second language teaching (SLT) classrooms in primary and secondary schools was the focus. This study invites 76 students and 4 teachers from one tertiary university in Chinese mainland to survey their attitudes towards and the functions of CS. CS types utilized by teachers are uncovered as well based on Poplack’s (1980) three subcategories. Quantitative and qualitative data are attained via one Likert-scale questionnaire for students and two open-ended questions for teachers and learners respectively with this regard. By generating the mean scores and standard deviation from the scale answers through SPSS, students’ overall perceptions toward teachers’ CS are reflected, supplemented by in-depth open-ended question answers interpreted by Thematic Analysis from all participants. The results suggest that participants generally hold positive attitude towards CS, and inter-sentential/tag CS are used most frequently by instructors. Main roles CS playing include assisting English learning, strengthening English, and translation. This research indicates that CS could be appropriated accordingly given its high effectiveness of facilitating teaching and learning, especially for making up understanding gap. But overuse of it should be forbidden.
