Abstract: Hong Kong is a small city and the population density is very high. As the land of Hong Kong is limited and valuable, more tall buildings are built to reduce the consumption of land resource. Hong Kong is also located in the typhoon region, therefore she is often attacked by typhoons in summer. As the buildings are built higher and higher, they will become sensitive to wind. A wind sensitive building will have excessive displacement and acceleration during the typhoon attacks. However, the Hong Kong Wind Code does not consider the dynamic analysis of tall building. Therefore, some buildings in Hong Kong may have serviceability problem due to excessive acceleration or displacement although they satisfy the static approach of the Hong Kong Wind Code. The objectives of this study are i) to determine along-wind load time histories with a given design wind speed spectrum, ii) to determine the along-wind induced response of a typical building in Hong Kong , iii) to examine the serviceability performance of the tall building in terms of maximum acceleration and displacement at the top floor and iv) to apply passive control technology to reduce wind-induced dynamic response of the tall building and to enhance its performance. A sixty three storeys building in Central of Hong Kong is chosen for case study. A finite element model of the building is set up and thirteen wind load time histories are generated at different floors along the building height with Shinozuka's method. Then an equivalent damping ratio method is established to calculate the modal damping ratio of the building with dampers installed. Finally, the response of the building with and without dampers under the thirteen wind load time histories are calculated for comparison. The first natural frequency of the building is computed as 0.1627 Hz, indicating the building is very slender. The comparative study shows that the response of the building can be significantly reduced after the dampers are installed. The max. displacement response of the building center at the top floor can be reduced from 373 mm to 161 mm. The max. acceleration response can be reduced from 0.47m/s2 to 0.145 m/s2. The reaction forces of columns with control are about 48% - 55% of those of the uncontrolled building.
