Development of management information system for a small accountancy practiceen_US
An accountancy practice provides services in accounting, auditing, taxation and company secretarial matters. A sole practitioner requires a management information system to support the operation, control and planning of his small accountancy practice. The focus of this dissertation is to examine the management information requirement of a small accountancy practice and then build up a PC-based management information system to assist the practitioner to manage his practice. This is an innovation effort to apply PC-based tools to assist the practitioner in the management of his practice. This project is a computerization of the existing manual system. The practitioner requires information on job listing, accounts receivable, accumulated fee billing and certain important dates to run his practice. The existing manual methods used in the management of job listing, accounts receivable, accumulated fee billing and important dates are examined, data requirement are identified and the information required are specified. Since the practice is managed by the sole practitioner himself only, a single user system is developed. The deliverables of this project would be a database and eight database applications running on a standalone PC, which can provide information on job listing, accounts receivable, accumulated fee billing and certain important dates of the practice. The project had gone through the following steps: (1) system analysis; (2) database design; (3) schedule of applications; (4) schema of database; (5) screen layout of the new system; (6) detail application design; (7) development of the system; (8) user acceptance test; and (9) implementation. These steps are inter-related and the development software have imposed certain limitations on fulfilling the original design. There were back and forth among these steps during the progress. The development tool used in this project is Microsoft Access Version 2.0 which is a very popular Window-based relational database management system provided by Microsoft. This software was chosen for the project because of its user friendliness and readily accessible by the accountancy practice.en_US
