Development of an on-line franchising systemen_US
Electronic commerce (e-commerce) has been widely adopted in many places since the past decade. Various business models have been developed, but they mainly focus on corporation level. They are not applicable to business minded individuals who want to establish their own e-commerce business. Notably, the effort from an individual may not be able to overcome the many barriers such as resource poverty. Developing an e-commerce system requires substantial investment on hardware and software. Looking for suitable products, arranging product delivery, and dealing with payment issue are also not easy for a single person. It is believed that the franchise concept can be merged into a current e-commerce business model such that individuals can establish their own on-line storefront. This dissertation first describes a general framework for developing e-commerce system based on Standing's Internet Commerce Development Methodology [1]. This framework serves as a guideline for an organization to develop an e-commerce system, from planning to implementation. The dissertation then proposes an enhanced e-commerce model with franchise concept. Based on the above framework, the development procedure of such an on-line franchising system is discussed. To demonstrate how the system works, a prototype is developed and described in the dissertation. The key idea of this dissertation is to provide the missing knowledge necessary to link up three parties: suppliers, individual sellers (franchisees), and a central organization (franchiser) such that each party can enjoy the benefits from the effort of the others - suppliers have extra distribution channels through franchisees' stores; franchisees can start their business without initial investment; franchiser generates revenue from franchisees' stores.en_US
