dcterms.abstractRattan is a natural fiber composite that is widely used in traditional furniture - manufacturing industry. Although Rattan is a natural fibrous material like wood, bamboo... etc., its mechanical properties are quite different. In China and some developing Asian countries like Indonesia, rattan exportation is one of their countries' major economies. Therefore, more and more researches are done on propagating and cultivating rattan. In this research, we will concentrate ourselves on studying and relating the mechanical properties and the microstructure of rattan. When studying the mechanical properties of rattan, the dynamic mechanical and thermal behaviors like bending modulus, loss tangent and softening point are studied by using the Dynamic Mechanical and Thermal Analyzer. With the help of the computerized optical microscope and scanning electronic microscope, rattan microstructure is studied. Moreover, the volume fraction of voids, fibers and other plant cells are evaluated by an image analyzer software. Based on the above findings, the relationship between the bending modulus, loss tangent behavior, softening point and volume fraction of fibers, voids and plant cells are analyzed and concluded. Moreover, a modeling technique is proposed to explain the relationship.en_US
