Abstract: Demand Side Management will play an increasingly important role in Hong Kong while the electricity market in Hong Kong is increasingly pressurised to be de-regulated. As a part of DSM implementation, a long-term and close monitoring of electrical load profiles is of critical importance. A detailed load profile study can provide a thorough understanding of electricity consumption pattern and hence appropriate DSM opportunities can be identified and implemented. In this dissertation, a detailed study was carried out in a typical hotel building in Hong Kong. The study included a one-year continuous monitoring of the electricity consumption of the selected hotel via a measuring station, supplemented with on-site measurements on the base loads and chiller loads. From the measured results and profiles, many valuable findings regarding the characteristics of electrical load consumption pattern were obtained. Most importantly, a lot of DSM opportunities can be explored, identified and quantified through the detailed analysis of these results. As this research was conducted in a typical type of hotel building in Hong Kong, the analysis can provide much valuable information for similar studies in other hotels. In addition, the approach used in this study can also be extended to other types of buildings in commercial or industrial sectors for exploring and identifying appropriate DSM opportunities. Although a very detailed analysis of the exploration and identification of DSM opportunities was achieved through studies of electrical load profiles in a typical hotel building in Hong Kong, regular reviews to further explore the DSM opportunities and re-evaluate the benefits gained are required due to the fast-changing DSM programs adopted by utilities.
