dcterms.abstractThe bridge analysis methods adopted in Hong Kong are usually grillage analogy, orthotropic plate theory and finite element method. These methods are rigorous and require complex use and sophisticated interpretation. Furthermore, these highly analytical methods often require advanced computer aids. Based on the idealization of the bridge superstructure as an othrotropic plate, simplified methods have already been developed in other countries and implemented in various design codes. These methods allow designers to determine manually the design forces in a bridge deck with a minimum calculation. The development of the simplified method in Hong Kong started a few years ago. The method has already been developed for the determination of design longitudinal moments and longitudinal shears in slab-on-girder bridges. However, modification and enhancement of the simplified methods for other bridge types such as slab bridges are required. Also, determination of the design torsion is necessary for the development of the method. This dissertation aims at further developing the simplified method for Hong Kong. The study has been focused on the determination of maximum torsion for slab-on-girder bridges and determination of maximum longitudinal moment, longitudinal shear and torsion for slab bridges. The proposed method has taken into account aspects of a bridge that influence its load distribution. The proposed simplified method is in a graphical form. Hand method of analysis employing formulae and charts are used to calculate the critical forces at internal and external girders. The results from the proposed method do not deviate significantly from those obtained by rigorous analysis using semi-continum method.en_US
