dcterms.abstractThe HK-BEAM scheme for new high-rise residential buildings (HK-BEAM Version 3/99) has recently been issued. In this scheme, the Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) is used as the parameter to assess the thermal performance of the building envelope design. This study is intended to be a third party evaluation of the scheme, which focused mainly on the method for assessing energy performance of residential buildings. In this study, the design of 37 residential buildings were surveyed and the assessment showed that OTTV can serve as a good indicator of the energy performance of' residential buildings in Hong Kong. The assessment criteria had also been reviewed and adjustments to the criteria are proposed. Computer simulation results showed that, by maintaining a low OTTV, electricity consumption for air-conditioning could be significantly saved. In addition, a set of External Shading Multiplier (ESM) for single sided fin projection to windows was developed and is proposed to be included in the OTTV calculation method, in order to give more accurate results.en_US
