Past, present and future of enterprise resources planning development : is knowledge management a future trend?en_US
Information Technology (IT) has become one of the major components in a competitive market. Enterprise resources planning (ERP) system is the major tool to handle the daily operation and increase supply chain management of an organization. In the past research studies, ERP mainly focused on data management and operation processing. Nowadays, most of the companies have their own ERP systems. Companies, however, cannot only rely on the ERP system to improve their competitiveness, they are now moving from information economy to knowledge economy. Knowledge management (KM) is one of the critical factors to increase the competitiveness of a business in order to lead to success in today's changing world. This study involves six leading research journals in MIS and KM to analyze the research studies related to ERP. We investigated how to apply KM to ERP in order to improve the supply chain management and competitiveness of an organization and also explore the new research area of ERP with KM. We also investigated what research topics in ERP and KM that can gain patent. By comparing research topics of academic papers and patents, the gap between the research topics about ERP and KM on academic paper and patent was found out. We then proposed a new framework of knowledge-enabled ERP (KERP), which applies knowledge management activities in ERP. Based on the new KERP framework, we decided to focus on a set of potential research topics and discuss which topics have more potential for the academic publication, the development of a patent or a commercialized product. Lastly, we studied the current ERP software and portals in the market and stated some suggestions on what other KM features can be added in the current ERP software.en_US
