Increasing the benefits of computerization in a rehabilitative hospital through action researchen_US
The application of computer systems in healthcare is growing rapidly and continuously. Various computer systems have been used in the rehabilitative hospital studied in this project since 1993. Apparently, no systematic review on the use of the computer systems in the hospital has been conducted. Problems associated with out-dated computer configuration, incompatible software versions and limited function of the computers were observed. With the use of action research, a sample of computer users in the rehabilitative hospital were interviewed to identify the benefits and limitations of the computerization in the hospital. Data collected from the interviews were analyzed. Limitations of the existing computer systems were found. Actions were followed, these included upgrading the hardware and software, extending the computer network and the e-mail systems to all departments of the hospital, providing additional computers to the departments and organizing training sessions to all users. Evaluation of the actions performed was conducted. The outcomes of the evaluation revealed that the actions were effective. The computer systems were improved with marked improvement in communication efficiency, information availability and timeliness. Saving in use of time, paper and storage space were also resulted. Decision-making process was enhanced by the improved computer systems. Other areas for improving the hospital computer systems were identified in regard to the results of evaluation. These were the provision of education/training programs to the users, improving the computing links between the Hospital Authority and the hospital, sharing the use of commonly used systems and farther extending the computing network. The development of computing science and technology is rapid. In order to adequately apply the computer systems to the healthcare industry with the achievement of expected outcomes, regular and systematic reviews of the systems should be conducted. Action research, is thus an appropriate method to be adopted.en_US
