An investigation of the difference between 8-hour and 12-hour shift systems for power plant & gas plant operators in Hong Kongen_US
As we all know humans are diurnal animals, we are used to working in the daytime and sleeping at night. Shiftwork is more or less opposed to the human circadian system. Although we understand that there is an unknown number of people both willing and able to perform shiftwork (Wilkinson 1992), we cannot ignore that certain amount of shiftworkers are actually suffering from working at night. They are both not willing and unable to perform shiftwork, but they have no choice due to financial reasons. To take care of shiftworkers, no matter they are able and willing to perform shiftwork or not, a good shift system must be designed. We must also understand that some of the shiftworkers are performing duties where public risk is a concern. Gas Plant and Power Plant Operators are the typical examples of them in Hong Kong. The purpose of this study is to examine how shift schedules affect their quality of life.en_US
