A comparison of domestic waste management between conventional and automated refuse collection system in public housing estatesen_US
Domestic waste collection is not just a simple routine process. Proper design and management plan are the key elements to ensure a clean and tidy living environment. The introduction of the automated refuse collection system in large public housing estates by the Hong Kong Housing Authority is a step toward healthy living environment. Automated refuse collection system is a standard feature for all future public housing blocks wherever practical and economically viable. This dissertation provides an in-depth study on the domestic waste collection system. It is recommended to use the automated refuse collection system which can collect the refuse in an environmental friendly manner although the initial cost is higher than the conventional collection method. A survey was carried out in two housing estates to gather the tenants' feedback on domestic refuse collection system through the developed questionnaire. The result was discussed in the report. Various individual interviews were conducted to architects, engineers, housing managers, cleansing workers and plant operators to gather their comments on the refuse collection system. Furthermore, recycling and waste management are addressed and the feasibility of the application in Hong Kong is explored. A good management plan is an important step to change the culture of the domestic waste collection.en_US
