Expert system for rating manufacturing firms in Chinaen_US
The opening up of China by accepting western capitalist business practices and the subsequent transition from a planned to a semi-planned economy offers many opportunities for western multinational firms seeking to expand their global market coverage. No matter what is the firm's aims, by giving proper considerations to relevant areas in the evaluation process, the most optimum decision will likely be reached, hopefully leading to a successful investment decision. In such aspect, firm/company rating becomes more and more important. In the market, there is no well established rating system for the firms/companies under China's environment. This is probably due to the difficulties in obtaining the proper information and the expertise for the evaluation. The accuracy and quality of firm evaluation is crucial and critical in management's decision making process. It requires the knowledge, experience and judgment to assess the firm's performance. However, number of experienced experts in rating industry specifically for China market is not many. The Expert System technology is believed to be a mean which provides the tools in performing firm rating. If the knowledge and expertise on firm rating are captured, which can be made use of at any time by any person, then there would be significant improvement in the quality of work in terms of accuracy and consistency. Yet, the most important is that this may enable non-expert to participate in the firm rating tasks. In this dissertation, an Expert System prototype was developed to test the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in firm evaluation and rating. The rating and scoring technique by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is also imposed in the development of the system. After the development, user evaluation was carried out and the responses were analysed. The results had been encouraging. Besides, a Neural Network, another AI technique, on the same topic was also developed for the system comparison.en_US
