| dcterms.abstract | This study investigated the relationship between self-efficacy and pre-vocational work performance of persons with schizphrenia. Ninety-one patients with schizophrenia were recruited from settings offering similar level of pre-vocational training programs. Structured interview was conducted to each participant, and the demographic data was recorded in a specially designed record sheet. Each participant self-administered the Chinese General Self-efficacy Scale (CGSS). Their pre-vocational work performance was rated by the trained independent assessors by the Workshop Behavioral Checklist-Revised 99 (WBC-R99). Self-efficacy of persons with schizophrenia showed significant positive correlation with their work performance in pre-vocational training program (r=.739, p < .01). The total score of CGSS showed low to medium correlation (.337 to .688, p < .01) with the items of WBC-R99. No significant difference in self-efficacy (t=-1.960, df= 89, p = .053) was found among the novice or experienced participants. The number of previous attempts (r=-.1l4 p= .431) and duration of current attempt (r = -.019,p = .898) had no significant relationship with self-efficacy belief Pleasant and unpleasant prior experience in pre-vocational program had significant difference in self-efficacy belief (t=5.16, df=18, p = .000). Finally, results showed that significant t score was found in CGSS but not in WBC-R99 between different gender (t=-2.832, df=89, p =.006). Self-efficacy provided information on the belief of own capabilities in coping with prospective situations in pre-vocational training program. The self-efficacy of patient was a crucial element for clinicians to formulate the discharge plan. It can be used as one of the predictors in pre-vocational work performance. Moreover, the results suggested that clinicians might encourage their self-efficacy beliefs to enhance patients' pre-vocational work performance. | en_US |
