Abstract: A training system in the form of flexible assembly cell was constructed. It consists of two robots and a set of conveyors that are controlled by a PC running in a multitasking environment. The system software consists of ten software modules whereby three of them are for production planning and scheduling while the rest are for system control and monitoring. Scheduling is done by iteration from the device availability that allows the assembly operation to be in full automation or in sequence with stepwise activation. The control modules were designed to be generic that flexibility for module installation, operation definition, system modification and expansion is enhanced in the system. Flexible device integration has been achieved by adapting the universal isolator cards, which were made for the interfacing between the devices and the I/O interface card in the computer for the transmission of signals between application modules and devices. The developed system has been tried out to assemble a commercial product and has been demonstrated to provide consistent and reliable control. The experience gained and the approach discussed in this dissertation would be a good reference for application in small cell control systems requiring relatively low cost, readily available hardware platforms and software development tools.
