An exploratory study of reasons of choice and the use of Chinese and western medicine among the Hong Kong Chinese with rheumatoid arthritisen_US
Many patients with RA should like to use Chinese medicine even they are also receiving regular follow-up in western clinic. This phenomenon is common for patients with chronic or incurable disease, for example rheumatoid arthritis. However, there is only a few studies to reflect the actual situation. This study aimed at exploring the reasons of this. It is a descriptive study using a self-developed questionnaire based on Andersen's model which consists of personal information, predisposing factor, enabling factor, need factor, use and belief of Chinese and western medicine. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire were tested by content validity procedure and test-retest reliability procedure respectively. An interview was arranged to 40 patients with RA having follow-up in the United Christian Hospital Rheumatology Clinic by convenience sampling. Non-parametric tests such as descriptive statistic, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Wilcoxon signed Ranks test were used to analyze the data. Content analysis was used to analyze open-ended questions. Results showed that predisposing factor and need factor affected patients' choice of treatment most. Types of Chinese and western medicine used; suggestions for nurses on how to improve their role of informant in using Chinese and western medicine would also be discussed in this paper.en_US
