| dcterms.abstract | This project-based report is adopting an in-between approach, which include both qualitative and quantitative methods to identify the differences among youths in the addiction continuum. The significance of addiction continuum and its implications on present young substance abuser service were made. Their attitude and behavior of substance abuse were examined and analyzed in this study. 30 youths either at risk or having experiences of substance abuse were interviewed. The research attempts to develop a flow of categorization of the young substance abusers into different stages according to Nowinski's Addiction Continuum (Nowinski, 1990). The characteristics in attitude and behavior of youths in different stages were examined with the interviewing version of Chinese Drug Involvement Scale (CDIS) (Lain, inpress, 2003). The results indicated that the marginal youths adopted an accepting attitude towards substance abuse.There is an increasing degree of acceptance and behavioral involvement towards substance abuse among youths according to the addiction continuum. The young abstinence and experimental users shared similar perspectives towards substance abuse while the social, instrumental and habitual users have distinctive higher degree of involvement. The more positive expectancies of, valuing more favorable to substance abuse and the closeness to, the positive attitude to the substance abuse peers contributed one's higher degree of behavioral involvement in substance abuse. Tailor-made services according to the characteristic should be developed. The construction of the categorization flow chart according to addiction continuum and the interviewing version of CDIS in local context would be of reference to local professionals who work for young substance abusers. Deeper understanding of the youths' substance abusive attitude and many reflections on present services yielded after conducting the project. | en_US |
