dcterms.abstractThis study was conducted to compare the effect of heel cushioning foot orthoses with and without medial longitudinal arch support (scaphoid pad) on treating plantar fasciitis. The medial longitudinal arch support was provided by an off-the-shelf scaphoid pad, which was commonly used in the author's work place. Most patients claimed that the heel cushioning foot orthosis with scaphoid was effective to reduce heel or arch pain. Previous studies showed the effect of scaphoid pad in supporting the foot arch and the effect of another type of foot orthosis with arch support. Therefore it was supposed that the foot orthosis with scaphoid pad can treat plantar fasciitis successfully. However, no research studied this type of foot orthosis to investigate the effect of the scaphoid pad on plantar fasciitis. Now we have to conduct a scientific study to investigate the effect of foot orthosis with and without the scaphoid pad respectively. The effect was investigated from the Foot Function Index (FFI) including pain level, disability and activities limitation before and after the foot orthotic treatment. Totally 38 subjects were recruited to the study. After 9 weeks, 34 subjects completed the whole treatment. Their characteristics of age, sex, body mass index, pain side, arch index and duration of pain were collected. Two-way Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance was performed to analyse the score of each sub-scale and the total score from the three sessions between two treatment groups. The results indicated that the FFI score obtained in the treatment of the heel cushioning foot orthosis with scaphoid pad is not different from that in the treatment of the heel cushioning foot orthosis without scaphoid pad. But the FFI score was significantly reduced after 9 weeks in both treatment groups. It was concluded that the foot orthosis with scaphoid pad is not different from the foot orthosis without scaphoid pad on plantar fasciitis. Moreover, the heel cushioning orthosis can act as the initial orthotic intervention to relieve pain caused by plantar fasciitis before more costly orthotic designs will be applied.en_US
