Abstract: E-commerce is quickly becoming an important part of all company's growth strategies. Deploying E-commerce solutions is about removing geographic and time barriers, streamlining business processes to reduce overhead and increase the speed of execution as well as allowing companies to conduct business transactions and create new ways of delivering value and service to customers. Most importantly, it is about gaining competitive advantages. E-commerce bases mainly on the Internet. To many companies, the first use of the Internet is to communicate with customers to deliver product and promotional messages. Other companies have moved beyond this first step to allow customers to order products and services that can be delivered either via traditional channels or via the Internet. More visionary companies are using the Internet to apply the benefits of computing to all facets of their business. Here, the Internet becomes a global network providing a standard means of efficiently connecting with not only every employee, but also with customers, suppliers, vendors and channel partners. While E-commerce solutions are benefiting different industries in overseas countries, the application of E-commerce in the business environment of Hong Kong has just started for not long. In view of the challenges the hotel industry of Hong Kong is facing, this report presents the business values of E-commerce and describes how they can be used for enhancing the competitive advantages of the hotels in Hong Kong. In the report, the business values of E-commerce are analyzed qualitatively while the ways the competitive advantages of the hotels can be enhanced are addressed through the conducting of a survey. A business model that the hotel practitioners can use for enhancing the competitive advantages of the hotels is also proposed in the report. The model not only proposes the ways the competitive advantages can be enhanced, but also highlights some key areas of concern for E-commerce endeavors. These are related to information technology strategies and change management. Finally, the report also discusses the practical implications of the research results and suggests further research efforts relevant to the subject.
