This is a preliminary study of the perceptions of the Form One novices towards learning through the medium of English, after being taught through Chinese in the past six years in the primary schools. The two sample groups of 78 students had been assessed to be on the extremes of the achievement continuum. This report is divided into six chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the background of the research study. Chapter Two is a review of the situation of the medium of instruction in Hong Kong, together with a summary of the previous research on the issue that has been conducted locally in these two decades. Chapter Three is the methodology of this study, including the research questions, description of samples, instruments and method of data analysis. Chapter Four contains the results of the findings drawn from Questionnaire 1 on the attitude and affective element with regard to students' readiness for English-medium instruction. With the data drawn from Questionnaire 3, Chapter Five focuses on the students' perceived level of understanding of the subject matter and potential problems when learning through English. Chapter Six contains those findings about students' performance and behavior in classroom learning. Description is based on the classroom observation of EPA and Maths lessons and students' self-evaluation of lessons. Chapter Seven is the summary of the findings of this study.
