Abstract: Software reusability is widely recognized to be a key to improving productivity and quality of a software system. Rather than building the whole system from scratch, a new system can be assembled and constructed by using existing, market proven and vendor supported software components. The increased offering both commercial and academic, of ready-made reusable software components results in new methodologies for software development. Component-based software development (CBSD) has emerged as one of the core development techniques to support the reuse of these ready-made reusable components in the software industry. The characteristics of CBSD impacts and changes the emphasis on the traditional waterfall software development life cycle stages of planning, analysis, design, implementation, integration, testing and maintenance. CBSD depends heavily on the utilization of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products as the underlying foundation for new application development. Selection of right COTS products for the right application development constitutes the first important step in CBSD. It is observed that a many-to-many selection relationship commonly exists between CBSD applications and the available COTS products in the market. This not only makes the selection process difficult, but also leads to inefficient and inaccurate COTS product acquisition. In this project, a new COTS selection model will be introduced to break down this adverse selection relationship. In addition, the new selection model is domain specific. Instead of selecting COTS products just for a particular application use, domain based COTS components will be selected and reusable for developing a family of applications in the same domain. Detailed domain analysis and COTS selection methodology for the margin trading system domain will be studied in the project. By means of the new COTS selection model, domain specific COTS components are successfully found. They are screened and evaluated against the selection criteria in the new selection model. At the end of the selection process, two kinds of qualified COTS products for the concerned domain are acquired for an application construction.
