| dcterms.abstract | Chronic and recurrent problem of shortage of nurses coupled with the future greater demand for high quality and motivated nurses and great competition for secondary school leavers from other profession prompted the investigation of school students' career choice. Factors influencing A-level students' interest of nursing as a career were the focus of this study. The purpose of this study is to determine what variables influence A-level students' interest in nursing career and to evaluate which variables may be altered to promote interest n the nursing profession. Using descriptive survey design, 1,246 Form 6 students in Kwun Tong region were surveyed. Data were collected through a researcher designed self-completed questionnaire, the Nursing Career Questionnaire. Chi-square, t-test and analysis of variances were used for data analysis. Of these responses, there were 28% respondents reported that they were interested to study nursing. The findings indicated that students' decision to choose or not choose nursing was significantly influenced by Demographic characteristics: gender (p<0.0005), biology subject pursued (p<0.0005), previous academic achievement (CGP) (p<0.0005) and mother's occupation (p=0.012); and Total perception score (p<0.0005). Students' intention to study nursing was also significantly affected by Social influence: Parents (p=0.001), school career masters (p=0.019) and friends (p=0.028)); Past experience with career activities (p<0.005); and Working in hospital (p<0.005). Backward elimination logistic regression analysis concluded that female (p<0.0005), biology study at Form 5 and A-level (p<0.0005), Total perception scores (p<0.0005), participation in career activities (p<0.0005) were found to be predictors of the students' intention to study nursing. Results of this study can be used by nurse leaders and recruiters to develop strategies and help A-level students perceive the nursing as a career more positive way. Expanding the informational sources about nursing can facilitate the recruitment process. | en_US |
