| dcterms.abstract | This study was designed to examine the content validity of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (D.O.T.) (United States Department of Labor, 1991b) as applied to the construction site workers in Hong Kong. The job selected for study was that of a Painter in the construction industry, i.e. Painter (Construction). The whole study was divided into 3 stages, First Expert Panel Review, Second Expert Review, and Field Study. The First Expert Panel was asked to determine the significant job requirements of Painter (Construction) with the use of a questionnaire, which was constructed with reference to the D.O.T. and the Stage Model of Industrial Rehabilitation. (Matheson, 1988). 54 items of the questionnaire were suggested to be significant job requirements of Painter (Construction) by the panel. The responses on the individual items of the questionnaire were found to have differences in 14 items among the 3 subgroups, the Trainer subgroup, the Worker subgroup and the Employer subgroup. The Second Expert Panel was asked to identify the criteria of job requirements for Painter (Construction) in Hong Kong. The results indicated that the criteria identified by the Panel were different from the ones suggested by the D.O.T. in 22 items. The responses on individual items of the questionnaire were found to have differences in 4 items among the 3 subgroups of the panel. Field Study was carried out to verify the criteria of job requirements of Painter (Construction) as identified by the Second Expert Panel. Only 26 items, which were directly observable and measurable, were selected for field study. The results indicated that there were differences among the criteria identified by the Second Expert Panel and the Field Study in 2 items. There were also differences among the criteria identified by the D.O.T., the Second Expert Panel and the Field Study in 3 items. The results of this study substantiate the postulation that the validity of D.O.T. is doubtful. Some components of the Worker Characteristics Components of D.O.T. are regarded as insignificant in measuring the job requirements of Painter (Construction) in Hong Kong. The criteria for the components were found to be different among the ones suggested by the D.O.T., the Second Expert Panel, and the Field Study. However, it is still impossible to conclude that D.O.T. is invalid in measuring the job requirements in Hong Kong within the limitation of this study. Although there were some limitations on this study which restrict the inferential power of the findings, it does provide other researchers information which suggests that some components of the D.O.T. may not be applicable in measuring the job requirements in Hong Kong. Hopefully, this work will stimulate more studies to verify the validity of D.O.T. as applied in Hong Kong. | en_US |
