Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to study how to apply the technologies of RTK mode of GPS and GIS for the piling setting out work of Engineering Surveyors for large civil construction projects in Hong Kong. The land piling setting work for West Rail Project was used for testing the RTK and the Setting Out GIS System developed in this dissertation. The setting out work of Engineering Surveyors is to transfer the design information described in drawings of civil construction projects to the grounds by inscribing the information out with marks or pegs for construction workers to build a designed structure directly according to the positions indicated on the drawings. The setting out work consists of two parts. One part is the outdoor survey works that uses survey equipment to set out actual position on ground. The second part is indoor works. This involves the collection of the setting out information from the drawings and to prepare the data so that it is suitable for use in the outdoor survey works. The first part of this dissertation deals with the use of RTK mode of GPS for piling setting out work or the outdoor part of setting out work. Two Leica SR530 receivers are used for the test. The working principles that affect the setting out accuracy will be described. The advantages of using RTK mode of GPS for setting out works will also be described. Furthermore, the transformation method of WGS 84 to HK 80 Grid and the orthometric height of Principal Datum problem will also be described. In addition, the problems of using RTK mode of GPS for setting out work will also be examined. The second part of this dissertation deals with the usage of GIS for setting out work or the indoor part of setting out work. In order to test the Setting Out GIS system developed in this dissertation, the simulated data for the piling setting out work of the West Rail will be used. The working background for setting out and the existing working methods are described to find the requirements of users. A data model is developed for the setting out work and is used with ArcView GIS. Choice of computer hardware and GIS software is elucidated. At the end of the second part is the evaluation and comment of the system.
