dcterms.abstractAs more and more people and goods travel by rail, it is necessary to meet the demands for more effective rail operation. Efficient and effective communications are essential to railway operation. Communications on the railway are a multi-faceted, covering many areas of business. Passenger information systems and video surveillance systems are two of the major railway communications systems. Over the last few decades, typical passenger information systems were in standalone audio and visual displays with limited advertisement display features. In terms of video surveillance, typical analogue type Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems were used and the equipment comprised video CCTV cameras, video matrix switches, CCTV monitors and time-lapse video recorders. In the 21st century, the advent of high performance computers, communications and information technologies has developed those railway systems towards digital solutions. Passenger information systems with integrated entertainment and surveillance systems respond well to the changes under way in the global railway environment. Transport operators across the world have growing concerns about passenger safety and security on public transport systems after the terrorist attacks in New York, Madrid and London. Video surveillance coverage has now been extended to nearly every corner in station and in train compartments. Station operators are currently being so overloaded with video images that they are not able to monitor any incidents effectively. More intelligent surveillance applications with digital recording systems are emerging to ease the burden on operators. In addition to a safe journey, passengers also demand better passenger information and entertainment services in a rail network. From the railway operation's viewpoint, more passenger information and entertainment services allow for the generation of greater advertising revenues and better customer services. In this thesis, I will evaluate the state-of-the-art development and trends in multimedia communications, broadband and wireless networks, information security and intelligent video technologies. This thesis will review the existing passenger information systems and video surveillance systems in KCRC and will describe my experience with and consideration of implementing the advanced technologies in those systems in current and future projects in KCRC.en_US
