A study on trade unionism in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (JV case) and Hong Kong under an institutional frameworken_US
This paper is a comparative study on trade unionism in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with particular attention on the joint ventures and trade unionism in Hong Kong. With the integration of the South China economy, the relationship between the Shenzhen SEZ and Hong Kong becomes closer. It is therefore worthwhile to conduct a research on the activities of one of the major economic actors i.e. workers in the two places. The recent development of collective labour activities is outlined. There is coverage on structure, and roles and functions of trade unions in the target localities. These are to form the database for the further analysis. To have a more structured approach to the analysis of trade unionism, an institutional framework is employed with reference to Whitley's (1992) work. Like other economic actors such as the firm, trade union activities should be under strong influences of the environmental settings in which they exist. Collective labour activities are analyzed and explained based on selected institutional factors namely the "role of the state", "labour market" and "cultural factors". The paper shows how these institutional factors shape the labour movement in the two places. Using the institutional framework as a common basis, there is a comparison of the collective labour activities through highlighting the similar and different institutional factors the workers encounter in the SEZ and Hong Kong. The comparison also aims at giving some insights to the future development of the labour movement when the two places get closer and closer in the era of reforms in China and the changing of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997.en_US
