Abstract: The objective of this project was to study resources allocation with desirable task sequence planning and error recovery in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) process of Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) manufacturing system. A good resources allocation could improve machine utilization and productivity while the task sequence with correct precedence relation in component pick and place operation could guarantee quality of product. Furthermore, an error recovery in manufacturing system could provide a robust system. The constructed model was based on the SMT process of the computer manufacturer Company X. The manufacturing plant was located in China and its factory size was over 100 thousand square feet. There were over 500 staff working on the production floor. The SMT process fundamentally included screen printer process, transportation operation, components pick and place process, error detection and recovery process, solder paste reflow process and cleaning process. Thus, various types of resources involved in the SMT PCBA manufacturing process. In order to optimize resources utilization, different types of computer boards were manufactured at same time by sharing resources. Hence, the SMT PCBA manufacturing system was resource conflict, concurrently and asynchronous process. Due to the complexity of SMT manufacturing system, it was difficult to study system performance and sensitivity. Therefore, a simulation model was prepared using fuzzy Petri net techniques to model and analyze the SMT manufacturing system. The concept of fuzzy Petri net was applied in studying of resources allocation and modeling of task sequence planning and error recovery. The "Coloured Petri Net (version 3.0.2)" software was utilized to model and simulate the SMT process of PCBA manufacturing system while fuzzy logic was applied as a basis for reasoning of sequence of actions in component pick and place operation and error recovery in the system.
