dcterms.abstractAs reported in past fire records, smoke will give problems to people trapped inside. Toxic effects of smoke, not heat, should be watched. Victims in most of the accidents were those in rooms adjacent to the room area where the fire originated. Therefore, harmful effects of toxic gases in smoke to human beings should be studied carefully and this being the objective of the project. In this dissertation, the effects of toxic components of smoke to human beings are reviewed first. International standards and building codes related to smoke toxicity are then reviewed. Test methods have been developed for determining toxic potency data for different materials. A modified rig developed earlier for studying smoke toxicity of materials by following NFPA 269/ASTM E1678 was used. Materials commonly used in the local construction industry were assessed. A series of tests were carried out to determine the toxic potency data of selected building materials. In addition, the cone calorimeter was also used to study the smoke toxicity of burning those materials under different conditions. The measured carbon monoxide levels were used for describing the smoke toxicity. The test results will be useful for hazard assessment and building material selections.en_US
