Abstract: Since the ISO 9000 standards were established in 1987, the concept of quality system certification was well accepted by purchasers worldwide. Quality system certification has been regarded as one of the principal means of independent monitoring and improving the effectiveness of suppliers' quality systems. Being one of the internationally accredited quality system certification bodies, the Quality Systems Assessment Registrar (QUASAR) has been providing certification audit services to various industries and has established and maintained its own formalized quality management system to ensure it complies with accredited requirements. This study aims to explore, based on the practical certification audit experience of QUASAR and the third party auditor point of view, where a company can make improvements in order to go for a successful quality system certification. This study begins with some basic concepts and principles of third party quality system certification auditing and accreditation. The discussion then continues with an overview of relevant international standards and guidance documents of certification and auditing including ISO Guide 61 & 62, ISO 9000 series and ISO 10011. In conjunction with this, by making reference to QUASAR system, a detailed description of ISO 9000 certification and auditing processes are included in this study. The final part of the study report the common nonconformance that appears in ISO 9000 certification audits after a review of a number of ISO 9000 certification reports. The results obtained from a survey on attitude to ISO 9000 certification are discussed. The common approaches that are adopted by ISO organizations for implementation are also described in this part. Based on the findings this study has identified some critical success factors for certification. To prepare for the transition to ISO 9000 year 2000 version, changes of the standard are described. Impacts to ISO 9000 users including both certification bodies and certified organizations are discussed. The study then concludes with a highlight of some important issues of ISO 9000 implementation and a projection of future trends in quality system certification in line with the changes in the field of quality management.
