Abstract: In viewing of the prosperous growth of apparel industry in China and the aggressive expansion of apparel chains in the big cities of China, the reasons for this hot issue in both Hong Kong and China are worthwhile to be studied. The main objective of this project is to study China apparel chains retailing industry and their development and compare their apparel retail operation and strategy with Hong Kong. In conducting this research project, both secondary and primary data were searched to develop this study. After the confirmation of the research topic, desk research started to gather information about the development of apparel chains retailing in China and the operation of the selected chains. Besides, the business environment in China was also acquired through relevant literature. For primary data, as this research did not conduct survey, major sources were from interviews and observation. The aims of this dissertation are to investigate and compare the competitiveness of the apparel retailing industries in China and Hong Kong. Analysis on the environment of both Hong Kong and China to the apparel chain industry will be made on five aspects: threat of new entrants, threat of substitute product or services, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers and rivalry among existing competitors on the basis of Porter's five forces model. Due to the negative economic growth, market saturation and keen competition, most Hong Kong apparel chains faced deficit or profit declines in 1997. However, they only reallocated their resources rather than shrunk their outlets. Because the role of Hong Kong networks as headquarter together with the window display function in Asia. The China apparel chains face the keen competition also, however, the economic growth and change of buying pattern leads the increasing in buying capacity and market size respectively. Most chains can expand their outlets in inland province to increase their sales and profit. Each market has their identical characteristics, therefore, retailer should tailor make the operation procedure and strategy for different markets. Otherwise, the business cannot survive in the keen competition environment.
