Abstract: The hotel industry in China faced the global competition. Most of the state-owned hotels struggled in the difficult situation to find a way out during the period of the transition from planning economy to marketing economy. The form of the alliance became a trend in the international hotel development. At this time the international franchising hotel chains entered China with a different operation mode. Could the franchising bring opportunities for the state-owned hotels? The researcher made a study of the franchising through examining, comparing, analyzing and evaluating the perceptions of the state-owned franchised and independent hotel general managers on their external and internal business factors, and the international hotel franchisers in China. The franchising background information was acquired from the literature review to understand main and sub questions and then the conceptual research framework was formed, also, based on it. The research technique used in the methodology was qualitative. The data-collection instruments were in-depth interviews through calls plus two round questionnaires. Content analysis was used in the data analysis. Evaluation of content analysis was conducted to make sense and trustworthy for the findings. The conclusions and recommendations were made, based on the findings. The implications were provided for the state-owned franchised hotels and independent hotels. The future research was made on the relationship between franchisers and franchisees.
