Abstract: The process of tender mark-up adjudication in construction tendering is a subjective exercise based on expert knowledge. This knowledge is usually restricted to a few experts or the top management in a construction company. Further, the knowledge itself is generally heuristics and experiences of the human expert concerned and hence it is uncertain, imprecise and perhaps fuzzy in its nature. Systematic organization of this knowledge will certainly be invaluable for construction companies. In this connection, a fuzzy expert system for tender mark-up adjudication, FESTMA, is built that acquires and systematically organizes the expert knowledge of its human counterparts and gives output of recommended mark-up percentage. FESTMA is aimed at helping the less-experienced people in the construction industry to exercise the expert knowledge in tender mark-up adjudication. FESTMA can also aid the experienced experts by providing them with a systematic base of decision making thereby minimizing mistakes due to natural human errors. Results of empirical tests show that the recommendations made by FESTMA and by human experts are significantly no different and correlated. Further researches are suggested in the end to polish and refine the fuzzy expert system.
