Abstract: The rise of facility management (FM) as a profession in Hong Kong has been a controversial subject in the property management industry as to its service functions and scope of activity areas. People in the field find it difficult to link up the surface meaning of facility management with its legitimate definition that facility management is the management of non-core activities for an organisation in a way to support its core activities and operations. Facility management has also been mistaken as being synonymous with property management. The claim that facility management is able to provide added value to an organisation through the format of co-ordinated and integrated service management is also treated sceptically by practitioners in the local property management field. While facility management as a model in managing properties and facilities is not widely accepted at present, the study reveals that its growth and future are optimistic if the existing misperception and bias against facility management could be corrected. The recognition from the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will be fundamental to the prosperity of facility management as a profession in Hong Kong.
