Abstract: Over the decades, the strategies of health education and promotion have undergone a remarkable advancement. The characteristics of far-reaching, flexibility and interactive capability of the Internet create a new era of electronic health care. In this exploratory study, a Chinese on-line educational program was produced to promote cardiovascular health with the intention to address the risk reduction, to explore the audiences' characteristics and to collect the subjective opinions towards this Internet program. In six-month-time, 197 sets of responses were collected from the participants who were considered to be young, highly educated and physically healthy. Their positive feedback on the content and style of the program proved the feasibility of this electronic educational activity in the aspects of disseminating information and arousing the awareness of risk reduction. However, the critical element of a successful health promotion strategy, bringing about a behavioral change, was the weakest component in this program. The lack of representative sample size, generalizability and publicity, potential multiple submissions of data by the same individual, the questionable truthfulness of the answers, and the lack of objective measurement of the program's effectiveness composed the major drawbacks of this Internet educational program. Much more efforts have to be paid in order to make further improvements. Nevertheless, navigating the information superhighway may become one of the trends in the coming century. Health promotion by the electronic means is an exciting experience to both the providers and the receivers. Then the health care professionals should be well equipped to encounter this challenge.
