Abstract: In this dissertation, we carry out an analysis on different attributes in a software development project that can be used for project effort estimation using analogies. Scope of this dissertation is not any software project in any development platform. Focus is on those organizations with a well developed mainframe computer system and most of its software projects are maintenance or enhancement in nature. Also, these ogranizaitons are now adopting the Waterfall model as their software engineering paradigms. In this study, we find out the relationships between project dimensions and project effort when using analogy for estimation. Comments will also be made to these found dimensions. Secondly, we show that data that come from projects that had been gone lived long ago, should not be used in project estimation. We give an exact number of past project data that should be used and explain the physical meaning of this number. Finally, a comparison is done between this estimation method and other estimation methods. In this study, an encouraging result was obtained. We only need 19 past project data for estimation using analogy and can get a project effort estimation of error of 4%.
