A study on strategic planning practices in Hong Kong : an application inthe retailing industryen_US
An exploratory study on strategic planning practices in Hong Kong retailing industry has been made. This study found the retailing firms have recognized that exploiting future opportunities as the most attractive benefit whereas the requirement of time and high calibre staff as the major difficulties in the strategic planning. The retailers spend more efforts in short-term planning than in long-term planning. Most of them always prepare formal and written goals and objectives. Although they regularly make forecasts on their business environment, they rarely use scientific methods in the forecasts. The establishment of a corporate planning department is also not common in this industry. On the other hand, this study, in line with existing management literature, confirmed that culture plays a role in strategic planning practices and perceived environmental uncertainty. Environmental uncertainty, to a certain extent, affects the planning practices. However, culture does not have any moderating effect on the relationship between environmental uncertainty and planning practices.en_US
